A bunch of stoned slackers get hooked on delicious honey, with delicious results. I really like this story.

Hello everyone,  and welcome to the end of the volume!

I have a poll question in the comments section, for when you get done reading.

Thanks for waiting. I think after reading this one, it will have been worth it.

Ever had a song stuck in your head? Of course you have, there’s probably one there now. What if it didn’t go away? Days, weeks, months, the same song 24/7.

This is the off-the-wall, entirely unrealistic situation our protagonist Tamayo finds herself in.

… is it me or are Mr. Ito’s stories getting more and more satirical?

I can assure you they’re every bit as grisly as they always were, though.

A big hand for editor naereid who really stepped it up for this one.

While driving on a mountain road one night, Shigeru finds a girl covered in blood.

Sorry for the wait. This one’s pretty light and punchy, and so shall this post be.

There is bitter enmity between two villages, facing each other across a river. But instead of erecting walls and battlements, they both decided to put up mirrors. What could this mean? And where did all the people disappear to, all those years ago?

Finally Soichi has left us and we can get into the real guts of this volume.

I really enjoyed this story. It has a similar supernatural rural setting to ROAR OF AGES from the first volume, with the sad tone and metaphor-gone-wild setup of everyone’s favourite THE EARTHBOUND. Is it as good as those two? You’ll have to come to your own conclusion, but if those stories did anything for you at all I highly recommend giving this one a read.

Soichi is back in mischievous young boy form, which means we’re in for a lot of cruelty, slapstick and good times. And if that’s not what you’re into, from the next chapter Soichi graciously steps aside for NEW VOICES to resume normal service.

It was a couple of months back that a comment on this blog alerted me to the existence of Junji Ito’s CAT DIARIES. Basically, the guy loves cats. They seem to be one of his pet themes, alongside babyfaced heroines and gross bodily disfigurement.

So here comes the second story of NEW VOICES IN THE DARK, which may as well be subtitled SOICHI GETS A CAT. As you follow this story towards the horrifying conclusion which has already formed itself in your mind, take a minute or two to stop and admire the expression he puts into these bloody cats. These illustrations are a real labour of love, and I can’t help but feel that nobody could love cats that much without first making room by subtracting some of the love they should have for their fellow man.

Enjoy!

Hope everyone enjoyed their break – here comes another one, just like the other one. And a warm welcome to naereid who will be doing a better job than I ever could with the editing.

Does anybody remember this story, from the previous volume? Well the first chapter of NEW VOICES is a direct continuation. This story seems like kind of a capstone to Ito’s beloved character Soichi, a mischievous boy who curses people.

So check it out, THE SOICHI FRONT, and dig the nice editing.
