Michio hasn’t left his bedroom since junior high, and he should be in college by now. All his old classmates are turning twenty this year, and in Japan, that means you can vote, drink, and drive (not necessarily in that order). It also means that all across the nation, ceremonies are being held to celebrate these twenty year-olds “coming of age”.

One day, Michio gets a call out of the blue from a girl he crushed on back in school. She’s inviting him to the ceremony, and to a class reunion afterwards.

Will he go? Will he stay in his room? Wait, why is this a Junji Ito story?

Oh, that might be the part where the story takes place against a backdrop of vicious serial murders where victims are left naked and literally stitched together with fishing line.

I’ve loosely translated the title of the story as ARMY OF ONE, and I hope you like it.

Merry Christmas! The complete volume of VOICES IN THE DARK, now with an afterword by the author himself.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re having one to remember.

Voices in the Dark is a collection of horror shorts from Junji Ito, published in 2003. The stories themselves were previously published in bimonthly serials in magazines from Asahi Sonorama.

Every night, Noriko is visited by a convicted murderer who should be in prison. He has come to beg her forgiveness.

Will I have to revise my opinion of Junji Ito after this? This story isn’t safe for work, but it isn’t the kind of visceral gross-out story that most people associate with Ito. Which brings the amount of stories that aren’t like that to 4 of 7 in this compilation, a majority.

I was a bit late on this one, apologies.

Why are people all over the country choosing to stop and stand motionless, holding the same pose until they wither away? A social worker investigates the phenomenon of those known as the “earthbound”.

The safe-for-work Ito is back, and we get a story more similar in tone to ROAR OF AGES than anything else. Still, I like this chapter quite a bit, and if I had to rank it I’d put it right behind GLYCERIDE as my second favourite in this volume.

Only one story to round out the volume. Looks like I’m gonna make it.

Chapter five, and what can I say about this one?

The cheapest, most disgusting, and best of all the stories in this volume so far.

Yui and her brother Goro live right above their father’s poorly ventilated barbequeue restaurant.

Those of you who’ve seen bits and bobs of Ito’s untranslated work floating round might realise, as I did, too late, that this story is where THAT image comes from.

Chapter four, SECRET OF THE HAUNTED MANSION, and the very gross Junji Ito that we know and love is back.

The story is about two boys sneaking into a haunted mansion themed attraction that they suspect is actually haunted.

I hope you’re not expecting puppies and free hugs in there.

Chapter three this time, ROAR OF AGES. Another surprisingly safe for work entry. That makes two of three in this collection so far!

Fans might find this story about a mysterious flood kind of dull, departing as it does from the usual formula of gross schlock villain. But I liked it, and I’m grateful to the short story format that Ito can experiment with something more sad and earnest.

Plus he draws a pretty mean looking flood.

Here’s chapter two, THE GHOSTS OF GOLDEN TIME which as far as I know has never been translated. There was really no way to faithfully translate this one, though. It’s about a creepy Japanese comedy duo, and almost everything they say is an awful pun that only works in Japanese. At least it wasn’t supposed to be funny, then I’d really be in trouble. Bad comedy I can do.

It kinda dies instead of finishing with a bang, but as in chapter one, Ito has made another great villain gimmick here.

Happy Halloween! Here’s a new Junji Ito translation project.

Voices in the Dark is a collection of horror shorts from Junji Ito, published in 2003. The stories themselves were previously published in bimonthly serials in magazines from Asahi Sonorama.

What sets these apart from the other translated Ito shorts you can find online is their length. This first story, “The Dark Drinks Blood”, weighs in at 40 pages. OK it’s also the longest, but there are none under 20 pages. Seven stories make up the volume, and let’s see if I can do ‘em all.

I don’t expect this to make a huge splash since it’s been translated into English by other groups, but it’s been a year since any updates from either of them. I’m throwing my hat in the ring to do the whole volume, and for continuity’s sake, I wanted to do the first story too.

OK!
